Keyed Alike

You may also want to consider having your locks keyed alike. This means that more than one lock can be operated by the same key, making it more convenient e.g. having one key that can lock all the classrooms in a school.

This means that more than one lock can be operated with the same key. In a school, for example, it is more convenient to have one key which opens all the classrooms.

Type of Lock

Commercial locks are a little bit different from domestic locks as insurance companies usually require a higher level of security. The five types of commercial lock usually found on UK commercial properties:

  1. Mortise Locks: Higher specification that standard domestic mortise lock, if you have a wooden external door, you’ll most likely have one of these fitted.
  2. Cylindrical Locks: Fitted to more modern glass, PVC and wooden doors, along with some internal wooden doors. They sometimes come with thumb turn locks on the inside for ease of use.
  3. Auxiliary Locks: These are normally secondary locks that add additional security to a door. They are usually a latch bolt or a dead bolt operated by a key or a thumb turn or both.
  4. Exit Devise/crash bar: You usually find these on fire exits, where you have to push a bar to exit the door.
  5. Keypad Entry Lock: A lock not opened by a key, but a sequence on numbers or letters depending on what the keypad consists of.

BS8621 and BS10621 Approved Locks

BS8621 and BS10621 are British Standards that go over and above the more domestic based BS3621 that you often find in domestic based locks.

A BS8621 lock has all the security benefits of BS36121 lock but has the added ability to get out without the use of a key. This is ideal when the lock is on a Fire Door or fire escape where quick exit is required without the use of a key. However, having this type of lock on a door, be careful that such a lock is not installed near a window or letter box as someone could break the window and open the lock from the inside.

A BS10621 lock has all the benefits of the above lock, but can’t be manipulated from the inside once the lock has been locked from the outside. This is particularly useful if you are the last one out of a building and you are locking the building down. If someone breaks in through a window they cannot use the door as a means of escape where you could with BS8621.
